His light upon our hearts

Windmills

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

See here, these names of God? They are not just names — rather, they are His characteristics. And because of all that He is, all of us who walked in darkness have now seen a great light. He came to be the God With Us, to walk through the broken road to the cross just so that we can be His for eternity. These names, they stand true for who He is, yesterday, today, and forever.

Whatever storms might be raging and pushing you around; whatever mountains before you that are too high for you to climb — He is Emmanuel, God With Us. He is the Wonderful One, who remains faithful and is always good to us. He is the God of all creation; mightier than any of the battles and hurts we face today. He is the Counselor and Prince of Peace abounding in mercy and grace, leading us to His love and giving us peace and comfort wherever we are.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Here is the hope of the Advent, this season of waiting: there will be a light, shining bright in the midst of our darkness. As we wait, as we quiet down to prepare our hearts for Jesus — He will shine His light upon our hearts. Those flickers of light, these glimpses of grace and hope — they are there for us to see, helping us to find Him.

Here really is the beauty of our God. He will be found when we seek for Him, and when we do find Him? We find ourselves, wrapped in the gentle grace and warm light that pierces through any and all darkness. There are no conditions, no expectations; only Love that reaches for us, calling us to come to Him.
