one verse for the year 2015

“But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Romans 8:25 ESV)

I have had One Word for the year the past couple of years. In 2013, love. In 2014, it was trust. I am not one for New Year’s Resolutions, mainly because I do not like setting myself up for failure and I often feel like that is exactly what resolutions are — goals too big set in a timeline too short. Sure enough, I have tried to set smaller goals but I always end up trying too hard, striving to not be a failure and completely missing the point — changing along the way.

Yet, there is something different in praying about that one word for the year, in seeking God’s will as for how you can grow closer to Him.

This year is something different, though. I have prayed and thought about that one word for 2015 — coming close but not quite finding it. Somewhere along the lines of hope and faith and patience and trust (though trust was my word last year). But none of these were quite the right one, the one meant for this year. That is, until I came upon this Bible verse. In a different translation than the one I use and there it was, this verse for the year and more specifically, a phrase for this year rather than one word.

“But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.” (Romans 8:25 NLT)

This year, my one word is “wait”. Yet not just waiting but rather, waiting patiently and confidently. To wait on the Lord — to seek Him in the everyday, to see His goodness in the small and the great. To wait patiently — knowing that everything will happen in His timing and that He has a set timing for everything, a timing that is truly the best in all the possible ways. To wait confidently — trusting His promises and the things He speaks, that He will provide what is needed and He will make happen what is supposed to happen.

And I? I only need to wait, to expectantly hope and to wait patiently and confidently — all the time knowing that He is good.

  1. Ronja,
Love the idea of a verse instead of a word! And I just love the verse you chose — it’s beautiful. Yes, I too am waiting for his timing, but while I do, I’m pulling my prayer bench up close to him so spend this time in his presence. Happy New Year to you, and looking forward to your posts in 2015!

Valerie, thank you so much! Yes, you are so right — all this waiting, and the Lord telling me that yes I am indeed in a season of waiting now, means that the best place for me to be is in prayer and in His presence. God bless you!

Thank you, Ronja, for this thought-provoking e-mail. As I read it, I was reminded of Isaiah 30:15 “For thus said the Lord god, the Holy One of Israel: In returning [to Me] and resting [in Me] you shall be saved; in quietness and in [trusting] confidence shall be your strength. . . . ” My word for 2015 if Yield and the verses that go with it are Romans 6: 11-13. I shall be an instrument of righteousness, shining forth the light and love of Jesus. ( I just got that! :) Praise God for you, and may He continue to bless you richly!
