10 Scriptures for finding rest for your soul

in Venice Summer, to me, is a season for finding rest for my soul. It comes with these years of studying, I am sure, where study life tends to be hectic and semesters push me to my limits. So when school — or now, University — breaks for summer, it is the perfect season to “reset” my soul and be serious about finding rest.

That is the difficulty, I believe. To find rest for our souls, we need to be serious about seeking it — about seeking the Lord, because only in Him do we find peace and rest. It is too easy to get trapped in this world and its enticements that swift in like a waft of wind. It is too easy to let our minds muddle and our souls get unfocused, loosing our grip on what truly matters in eternal perspective. The good news for those of us restless and prone to wander — is that rest can be found, given to us by our good and gracious heavenly Father.

Matthew 11:28-30 — “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Hebrews 4:9-11 — “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.”

Numbers 6:24-26 — “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

Psalm 28:6 — “Blessed be the Lord, because He has heard the voice of my supplications!”

Psalm 29:11 — “The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.”

Philippians 4:8-9 — “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things arejust, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Psalm 37:5-7a (NLT) — “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.”

Mark 6:30-31a — “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.

Exodus 33:13-14 — “Now therefore, I [Moses] pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.””

Isaiah 30:15 — “For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.”

Rest is hard for me to come by, as I fret and worry so. But, you’re right, it’s something we must intentionally seek. And sometimes we have to fight for it, as the enemy of our souls wants to steal, destroy, and kill it.

Loved these verses – some of them were *new* to me.

Sharon, I tend to worry way beyond what is necessary, as well. But I want to learn how to intentionally seek the rest and peace that our Lord provides — and how to trust Him more and better, so as not to worry so much. I’m glad you stopped by here today, Sharon! God bless you!
