our help when we are overwhelmed (Psalm 142, part 3)

Psalm 142

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk they have secretly set a snare for me.” (Psalm 142:3)

Beloved, we have been here before, these waves of sorrow and sadness, weariness and hurt washing over us and leaving us feeling overwhelmed. We have walked through this familiar land before, and we will walk through it yet again.

Please know this, dear one: when you feel overwhelmed and alone. When you feel like you are crushing under this wave of hurt and that ache of your broken heart. When you feel like giving up and letting go. When you feel like you are carrying the weight of sorrow heavier than this world, like these pieces of your fractured soul have been trampled on too many times.

He has not left you. He has never left you, beloved. He is right here.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me. The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.” (Psalm 138:7-8)

Sometimes, it takes us coming to the end of our ropes to we see who truly holds on to us, who carries us in these days of darkness. Us sin-marred and broken people, we tend to turn to the works of our hands and strive to work it all out ourselves. We try, and we forget — our Lord is the Almighty One, El-Shaddai.

He is our King, who wore a crown of thorns to write out His Love for us with His blood. He is our Savior, who bent down low to walk the road to Calvary and carry our sins to the cross. He is our God, who lets His heart be broken again and again for our sin and our suffering, until His stripes have made your heart whole. He rose from the grave so that He can lift you up, too.

who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:24-25)

This week, beloved, know that you can bring to Him your sin and your sorrow. Nothing is hidden from our God; no darkness and no snare can reach you without Him knowing. No worry or struggle, no pain or brokenness is ever wasted when you turn to your Maker, the Almighty God. His goodness weaves graces into your story. His love turns your darkness into a story of hope.

So let us cry out to the God Almighty when we feel overwhelmed and trapped, knowing that He carries us through. Let us lift our cries for help to the One who walks with us in this journey of life, knowing He will make straight our path, holding our hand.

This is so perfectly timed for me right now that it brought tears to my eyes. A beautiful reminder of the Truth that I so need to hear. And even though my heart is breaking, I am holding on to The Hand that has and will hold mine forever.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me, Sharon. I am so sorry that you are going through such a hard time and that your heart is breaking right now! But I’m glad that you were able to find some words of comfort here. For me, it’s always such a comfort to know that the Lord goes before us and after us, and He is holding our hand as we walking through this journey of life. He is there, to help us and strengthen us and carry us.

You are in my prayers, Sharon. May the Lord bless you and overflow your heart with His grace and peace in this difficult time!

Thank you so much for these kind words, Kelsie! I love that the Lord has given us so much encouragement and comfort to be found in His Word, given that it is promised there that we will have to go through difficult times and testing of our faith to refine us. He truly is so good to us. Thank you for your visit, Kelsie! Blessings to you!

  2. Amen! What a beautiful way to start my day. Thank you! One thing that I LOVE about visiting you here, Ronja, is the grace that abounds because you are leading us to the author and finisher of our faith. In those moments, those days, and sometimes years, where we feel this overwhelming pressure and we are driven to our knees, it is good to know that we are surrounded by prayer warriors who are falling down to the soil of petition with us. That scripture i Hebrews 12:1 is taking on an entirely different meaning to me today. “Therefore since we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, cheering us on… run that race that is before you.” I have often envisioned it as the prayers of the saints in the heavens, but it is also the gathering of transcendent hope that lifts us up here like your words have been for me today.
Praying with and for you today!
    Bless you!

Thank you so much for your sweet kindness, Dawn! What a wonderful picture that is from Hebrews 12:1, to think that it is us, His people, witnessing of the life of faith by carrying each other in prayer and preparing the way for each other in that as well. After all, we are called to bear one another’s burdens — to pray for each other in all humility and gentleness, knowing that all of us walk through rebellious seasons, difficult times, and overwhelming moments. What a beautiful picture that makes, as well.

Thank you so much, Dawn, for stopping by here and sharing these beautiful words with me. It is always such a blessing to have you here!

  4. How we need this reminder every day…thanks. I love it that no matter our path, good or bad, little or big God is totally aware of it and never stops trying to draw us back to Calvary Road where His Son is the light on the road. Great truths.

Amen! What a great comfort it is to know that our Almighty God holds everything in His hands and nothing escapes from Him. Either He allowed it to happen, or He gave it to us… and we know that He is working in and through us in all circumstances. The Lord sure is so good to us. Thank you so much for these words of kindness and for stopping by here! God bless you!

  5. Oh Ronja– been living this the last month. So many heartbreaking situations for people around me, all coming to me for ministry help/encouragement. And while I grieved with each of them, I was honestly a little bit surprised how my heart/soul was not completely hopeless and overwhelmed.

Appparently, God has been working on me lately! PTL. And thanks for this, friend.

That is what I love about our God. When He places us into ministry, no matter how unable we feel to minister He will give us what we need in that place — or rather, He will be what we need. Whether we are overwhelmed or anxious or weary or just plain sad, we can always find what we need in Him. And the good news is– His grace is always sufficient, for every single day. It never runs out. What an amazing promise and comfort that is :)

Thank you for stopping by and sharing this with me, Sharita!

  7. Thank you so much for this encouragement, Ronja. It’s from 2015, but God led me to it today. Yes, we may sometimes feel so crushed with hurt, but again and again, He turns our darkness to hope in Him. Love and hugs to you!
