walking through the advent together: day 3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:1-5)

In the beginning — these words, they always take me to the right place, to the beginning. But more importantly, it puts my heart into the right place In the beginning, He was — and that already is the answer for our desperate hearts crying for an answer, the balm to soothe our souls bare and raw, the hope that drives away the darkness from the dusty corners of our souls.

Know this, though, beloved. We all do stumble into this Advent season with our hearts heavy, with darkness trying to plain surround us and us carrying our pain, our grief right there on our shoulders. This winter season reminds us of our broken dreams and frozen hopes, of all that should have been and all that would not be. Darkness lingers behind our steps, reaches for the cracked corners and our fractured souls — and it seems like there will always be more; like the darkness will linger and get darker every time, and we were worn out already to begin with.

But this is not the end, beloved. This is the beginning. Because in the beginning, He was.

When the beginning began, He was already there. When you began, He was there, too.

For every moment of your life, for every page in the book of your story — He has always been there. Walking there right next to you, securing every step of the way and picking you up when you fell, once again, to brush off the dust from the ground, to band-aid every single scrape and heal the open wounds, to push you on when the bleeding has stopped but you are still afraid to move on.

In the beginning, He was and He has been, ever since. This here, this Advent, this waiting season — beloved, let us be carried through the story of the scandalous Love come down. Let us be reminded of the relentless grace that pursues us even in the hardest winter of our heart. Let us be changed by hope humanified, and this amazing story that changed it all for all of us.

  1. Ronja,
Beautiful words! Yes, he is the beginning of all things in our lives, but this is hard to grasp when you feel like something is at an end. Somehow his joy and peace do flood our souls as he redeems whatever we feel is lost in our lives. Advent is the proof of that. Sharing the words of your heart speaks to us here!
